Sean Penn is excellent as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to a major political office. The depiction of 1970's activism rang true. Milk realized the political importance of coming out as a way to rally heterosexuals to support the civil rights of gays. Once heterosexuals realize that they know and like gay people, they are less willing to tolerate discrimination against them.
